Vacuum Coffee Maker
![]()
The principle of a vacuum coffee maker is to heat water in the lower vessel of the brewer until expansion forces the contents through a narrow tube into an upper vessel containing coffee grounds. When the lower vessel has more or less emptied itself and enough time has elapsed, the heat is removed and the resulting vacuum will draw the brewed coffee through a strainer back into the lower chamber from which it can be decanted.
Coffee made in a vacuum coffee maker is often described as ‘clean, crisp, rich and smooth’. A vacuum coffee maker must usually be taken apart to pour out the coffee.

Bodum Glass Vacuum Coffee Maker As beautiful as sculpture, as fascinating as chemistry, and as entertaining as theater, this vacuum coffee maker from Switzerland converts the ordinary process of brewing coffee into an artful performance. And it makes six 5-ounce cups of full-flavored coffee while it entrances. The coffeemaker fits together like this: water goes into the carafe, a filter fits into the mouth of a tube in the top globe, ground coffee goes into the globe (a scoop is included), the globe fits atop the carafe with the tube extending into the carafe, and the carafe goes onto the stovetop with a trivet or heat diffuser between it and electric or gas heat.
