Percolator Coffee Pot
Coffee percolators, electric and stove top, were the most popular coffee makers until the early 1970s when the convenience of automatic drip coffee makers shot them to the top of the consumer’s list.
Although a percolator may not be as convenient as an automatic drip coffeemaker nothing beats the room-filling aroma of percolating fresh brewed coffee. Plus, you get the distinctive perka-perka audible feedback that no other brewing method can supplant.
Percolator detractors say that because percolator coffee makers expose the grounds to higher temperatures that the volatile compounds in the coffee beans are dissipated as gas and not left to titillate your palate in the liquid that you drink. That would explain why percolating coffee smells so good.
Percolator enthusiasts are not dismayed. They praise the percolator’s hotter, more ‘robust’ coffee, and maintain that the potential pitfalls of this brewing method can be eliminated by careful control of the brewing process.
There is something to say for both sides of the dispute. When you’re camping, or when the power goes out, however, and you put that stove top percolator on the grill stove and smell the aroma and hear the perka sound I know what side you’ll be on.
