Let It Pour - Creating the Perfect Home Bar

What began in the fabulous 50s with the growth of suburban America is gaining popularity with today’s homeowners. The home bar is back and better than before, paving the way for casual cocktails and stylish home entertaining across the country.

“Today, the popularity of cooking shows, travel programs and television series with chic martini-toting women are bringing home entertaining back with a vengeance and a new sense of style,” says Michael Anderson, chef instructor for the Food & Beverage Management program at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Las Vegas.

“Today’s homeowners have moved beyond neon and dartboards and are creating home bars that fit in with their lifestyle and décor,” says Nancy Bohnett, academic director for Interior Design at The Art Institute of Las Vegas. “The process can be as simple or complex as you’d like and depends on space, taste and budget.”

Bohnett suggests two options for those tight on space but big on bars. “Most furniture stores offer stand-alone cabinets that blend with existing home décor. Alternatively, utilize a small kitchen island on wheels that has wine or stemware storage on the side. You’ll be able to use it every day in the kitchen and move it to an entertaining space when company comes calling,” she says. “From simple to sophisticated, French country to contemporary, there are pieces that homeowners can purchase and integrate flawlessly into their existing home.”

As budget and space grow, so do the home bar options. Built-ins abound including counter spaces and cabinetry that tie into the kitchen and can be used for serving food and cocktails. Affordable appliance options including wine chillers, ice makers and back bar refrigerators, are gaining in popularity and lending to the sophistication of today’s home bartender.

Once you’ve built your bar, it’s time to stock it up. Needed tools include a shaker, ice tongs, ice bucket, cocktail stirrers, bottle opener, wine opener, cutting board, knives, bottle pourers, toothpicks for garnish and stemware to suit your choice of beverage offerings.

What’s a bar without the beverages? Alcohol falls into five main categories that people can draw from — beer, wine, aged, non-aged and flavored liqueurs. “Aged alcohol staples include whiskey, bourbon and brandy,” says Anderson. “Non-aged usual findings include vodka, tequila, rum, gin, schnapps and vermouth. Kahlua, chambord, triple sec, sambuca, amaretto and Irish crème tend to be the more popular liqueurs.”

“Identify three to four signature drinks that you can make confidently and build your bar around them,” says Anderson. “Keep garnishes and mixers like juices and sodas on hand for the drinks you enjoy most and utilize ready-made mixes as a way to offer variety to your guests without the need for lots of supplies,” he suggests.

Whether you’re looking to showcase your cocktail talents with the latest in bar gadgetry or want a place to mix a simple drink to go with the game, develop a home bar that suits your entertaining and drinking tastes.

There’s Always Room for Chocolate

It’s no surprise, chocolate cookies are usually the first to disappear from the holiday cookie tray. From a dense chocolate cookie to a creamy chocolate filling or a delicate chocolate drizzle — adding chocolate nearly always guarantees a richly satisfying and delicious cookie, worthy of every bite.

Silpat 11-5/8-by-16-1/2-Inch Nonstick Silicone Baking Mat

List Price: $24.99
Buy New: $12.99
You Save: $12.00 (48%)

Features:
• Flexible silicone baking mat turns any pan into a nonstick surface with no greasing necessary
• Made in France of fiberglass and silicone; FDA, NSF, and Kosher certified
• Heat-resistant to 482 degrees F; lasts 2,000 to 3,000 times depending on use and care
• Wipe down using hot water and dish soap to clean; lay flat or hang to dry; lay flat or roll to store
• Measures 11-5/8 by 16-1/2 inches; freezer-, microwave-, and oven-safe

However, chocolate on its own can’t deliver that unforgettable cookie without quality ingredients such as complimentary spices, pure vanilla extract and real butter. Never use spreads or margarine to replace butter in a recipe; spreads contain more water than butter and will not deliver the same results.

These festive recipes from America’s Dairy Farmers offer all types of chocolate, from bittersweet to semisweet to white chocolate. Look for a good-quality chocolate with a higher percentage of cocoa — it will deliver the best flavor and melt better.

Bittersweet chocolate stars in the Double Chocolate Cherry Thumbprints, complemented by a subtle cinnamon flavor. The Peppermint Twists combine chocolate and crushed candy canes in a classic butter cookie, with a generous chocolate coating. Eggnog adds a rich flavor to the white chocolate fudge, while cherries and almonds round out the semisweet chocolate version.

Double Chocolate Cherry Thumbprints
Makes 6 dozen cookies

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 tsp. almond extract
4 oz. bittersweet chocolate, melted and cooled
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. cinnamon
10 oz. maraschino cherries, cut in half
3 oz. white chocolate

Directions:
In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add egg and almond extract; mix well.

Add bittersweet chocolate and blend to combine. Add flour and cinnamon; mix until well blended. Form dough into a ball, wrap in plastic and chill for 30 min.

Preheat oven to 350 F. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place 2 inches apart on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Press thumb in center of each cookie and place half a cherry in each depression. Bake for 15 to 17 min. Cool completely.

Place white chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 30 sec.; stir and continue to microwave in 10-sec. increments until chocolate is smooth. Drizzle white chocolate across each cookie. Chill 5 min. to set white chocolate.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.

Peppermint Twists
Makes 5 dozen cookies

Ingredients:
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract
Red or green food coloring
1/2 cup mini candy canes, crushed (about 20), divided
4 cups all-purpose flour, divided
2 tsp. baking powder, divided
2 oz. bittersweet chocolate, melted and cooled (see directions)
1 egg white, beaten
2 oz. bittersweet chocolate (optional)

Directions:
In a large bowl, cream butter, sugar and salt. Add eggs and peppermint extract; mix well.

Remove 1 cup of butter mixture and place in a medium bowl; set aside. To remaining mixture, add red or green food coloring (until desired shade) and 1/4 cup crushed candy canes. Add 2 cups flour and 1 tsp. baking powder; mix well. On a large sheet of waxed paper, press dough into a large rectangle (about 1/2-inch thick), cover with a second sheet of waxed paper and chill 30 min.

Add melted chocolate to reserved butter mixture; mix well. Add 2 cups flour and 1 tsp. baking powder and mix until well blended. On a large sheet of waxed paper, press dough into a large rectangle, (about 1/2-inch thick) cover with a second sheet of waxed paper and chill 30 min.

Remove dough rectangles from refrigerator and roll each into larger (9×16-inch) rectangles. Brush one layer with egg white and place other layer on top. Trim long edges. Roll up lengthwise into a tight roll, resulting in a 16-inch long log. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill 30 min. Preheat oven to 350 F. Slice into 1/2-inch slices, and bake on parchment-lined cookie sheets for 10 to 12 min. Cool completely.

Break up chocolate and melt in a shallow, microwave-safe bowl for 30 sec. Stir and continue to microwave in 10-sec. increments, stirring until smooth, but not warm. Dip half of each cookie into melted chocolate and sprinkle with crushed candy canes. Place on waxed paper until chocolate sets.

Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to one week.

Find Your Design Inspiration: Decorating Tips that Tap Into Your Personal Style

(ARA) - A favorite color, treasured art object or even a memento from a great vacation – any of these items can be the starting point for great design in your home. Find your design inspiration and use it to decorate in a way that speaks to your personal style.

Know Yourself
Take a tour of your own home. Do you notice you use a certain color in a variety of ways? Are there multiple objects, throw pillows, rugs or artwork in the same color family or with the same design theme? Is there a personal collection that shares the stage with your other décor? If so, you may have more of a style than you realize.

Delta Simply PuR Filtration System Single-Handle Traditional Spout Kitchen Faucet

Buy New: $101.38 - $199.99

My Pur Filter which fits over my kitchen faucet was causing me grief. It had worn down and was no longer staying put on the faucet. Well, as I was thinking of purchasing possibly a larger countertop pitcher, and getting rid of my Faucet Mount Pur Filter, I discovered that Delta now manufactures a separate Pur Filter Faucet and I quickly ordered. I checked multiple websites and Amazon has the best price plus Free Shipping. When we received it, my husband and I quickly installed it replacing the soap dispenser hole in the sink. WELLA!!!! I love it. It works well. The water tastes great and I can use the 3 Stage Pur Filters that I already have for this unit. Great price and Great thinking!!!!!

“Sometimes when you live with something for awhile, you overlook its meaning or sense of place in your home,” says home improvement expert and “Country Home” contributing editor, Leslie Segrete. “You need to step into your home with fresh eyes and rediscover what speaks to you from a design standpoint. Use that as your inspiration for the rest of your home.”

Look Around
Next, observe the world around you. Are you drawn to particular objects in nature? Are there certain colors that evoke strong emotion? You might be inspired by what you experienced during a trip to a tropical paradise or you may want to capture the feel of a cozy ski lodge.

“From the natural world, memories of a great vacation or even a recent stop at the mall, any time you step out of your home look to the items that catch your eye,” suggests Segrete. “You may be surprised to see how simple it is to use destinations as a means of bringing your own personal style into your home.”

Find a Focal Point
A focal point creates visual interest and is often the first thing that draws your eye into a space. As you walk through your rooms, identify key focal points throughout your home. Is it a favorite piece of artwork, distinguished architectural feature, mirror or other collectible?

“In the bathroom, for example, a great focal point is often your faucet, so be sure to choose one that makes a statement,” explains Segrete. “I like the Divine Collection from ShowHouse by Moen because of its strong, clean lines and square decorative accents. It has a distinctly elegant style that can draw you into the room. Plus, matching accessories such as a towel ring, robe hooks and a glass shelf will pull the room together for a well-coordinated look.”

In a family room or open great room, the television often becomes a focal point. Segrete recommends finding a unique armoire to “hide” the television when not in use, so that beautiful windows, fabrics or architectural details can take center stage instead.

Use a Theme
For a more personalized focal point, consider decorating with a theme. Not only will a theme jump start your creativity, it will often lead to the design of a very unique, one-of-a-kind room.

Says Segrete, “A theme can be the perfect way to recreate the lazy feel of the islands in your bedroom, or the luxurious, spa-like atmosphere of a five-star hotel in your bath. The possibilities are endless and should be as colorful and creative as your personality.”
Consider what hobbies, dreams, locations, interests, collections or design elements could be used as themes in your home and begin to experiment.

After all, your home should feel uniquely your own. Look for design inspiration in the world around you and learn to express your personal style.

How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Kidde Kitchen/Garage Fire Away Fire Extinguisher

Millions of people everyday rely on fire extinguishers to put out minor fires which start in the home. Fire extinguishers contain a powder which is known to instantly put out a fire and prevent it from spreading any further. In 2004, fire extinguishers saved over 25 lives in the United States and prevented over 1,500 injuries. Fire departments all over the world encourage home owners to have at least one fire extinguisher in the home at all times. That said, studies show that approximately 80% of homeowners do have at least one in their home, but the question is do they know how to use it?

Sure its great to know theres a fire extinguisher close by if you ever need one, but what most people dont understand is if you dont know how to use these devices, they are practically useless. Everyone should know how to use a fire extinguisher and if you are one of the many who dont, the follow steps will provide you with everything you need to know.

The easiest way to learn how to use a fire extinguisher is to memorize the acronym P.A.S.S. and memorize the meaning of each letter. The following list will provide you with the meanings of each letter:

P - The first letter to remember is “P”. This indicates to the user to pull the pin. Pulling the pin is the first step in the process and is crucial to the successful execution of fire extinguishers.

A - The “A” stands for Aim. This tells the user to aim the fire extinguisher nozzle towards the base of the flames.

S - The first “S” stands for Squeeze. This advises the user to squeeze the trigger while maintaining the extinguisher in an upright position.

S - The last “S” stands for Sweep. The user will then sweep the extinguisher from side to side making sure to cover the area of the fire completely.

Remembering the word PASS can save the life of you or someone you love.

Having a fire extinguisher in your home is a great idea however the location of your extinguisher is a determining factor in whether or not it will be useful. You will want to keep your fire extinguisher in areas which are most likely to produce fires such as kitchens, near fireplaces, garages or areas with a number of candles (perhaps a bedroom).

Do not keep your fire extinguisher near your stove. Stoves are a prime target for fires and should a fire break out near your stove, you will want to be able to access your extinguisher. You may also want to keep your extinguisher near an exit so you can leave it the fire becomes too large.

Can Opener - Smooth Edge

OXO Good Grips 1049953 Smooth Edge Can Opener

Sometimes the wheel needs to be reinvented, and the side-operation can opener, like this Good Grips Smooth Edge model from Oxo, is a case in point. Designed to operate on the horizontal, the opener makes a smooth cut below the can edge. The lid doesn’t fall into the can, and the opener makes minimal contact with can contents. Built-in lid pliers let you grip the lid without touching it for clean and efficient removal. Though the large handles may be unwieldy for small hands, Oxo does use soft, nonslip material for a more comfortable grip. Like most standard manual openers, this unit is designed for right-handed operation. It measures 7-1/2 inches long and is safe for the dishwasher. –Emily Bedard

Muffin Baskets

I’ve seen a lot of gift baskets popping up everywhere I look. There is even a store in my town that makes gift baskets, and that is all they do. It’s a great idea, as most people love to get them. I have always preferred to get gift baskets for people because you can make them with anything you want, and they are a fast and easy choice. In recent years, food baskets have really become popular, and the muffin baskets are the type I tend to see most often. You can buy muffin baskets, or you can make one yourself.

When shopping for food baskets, you want something that is fresh. I don’t mean full of preservatives fresh, I mean fresh out of the oven. When it comes to finding muffin baskets, this might be hard. You can ask when the muffins were made, but you may not get an answer because they may not know what to tell you. Preservatives keep food edible for long periods of time, but I don’t think they make a good tasting item. If you want fresh muffin baskets, you may want to do it yourself.

The great thing about homemade muffin baskets is that you can make them anytime. You don’t have to wait for the last moment to throw in fresh muffins, though you can if you want to. One year my friend and I made cookies and muffins and froze them. We took everything out of the freezer and make up our cookie and muffin baskets. I was really surprised to find that if you don’t leave them in the freezer for any longer than a month, they come out fresh. I was amazed that they tasted like they were just make, and I didn’t have to use any preservatives.

You can make up many batches of different types of muffins and store them in your freezer a few weeks before you plan to construct your muffin baskets. You can get them out the day before and put them in your basket. Just make sure they are protected by plastic wrap. They will thaw by the time they get to the recipients of your muffin baskets, and they will taste like they were just baked as long as you had them sealed in the freezer. I didn’t give out many, but those who got cookie and muffin baskets from me had nothing but good things to say. In fact, they wanted to know where I bought my muffins.

Kitchen Gadgets

I have to make a confession. I am addicted to buying things for the kitchen. From high tech kitchen gadgets to simple kitchen accessories, I have to have them all. In my defense, I do spend a lot of time in the kitchen and I do cook a lot so they do get used. Fortunately I have a large kitchen with a good work top area and lots of cupboards. If I was dropped on a deserted island without any kitchen gadgets, I must admit that I would probably struggle. It’s not that I’m spoiled, I just love using them.

My kitchen is crammed with the things that I’ve treated myself to and I also receive kitchen gadgets as gifts. It drives my husband mad! There are basic fundamentals that I update every so often, such as the food processor and deep fryer. Now, I’m not saying that an ice cream maker is essential but it is fun, as is the yogurt maker. I love my bread maker. I can put the mixture in at bedtime and wake up to the wonderful smell of freshly baked bread. The only down side is that I put on weight because the bread is so tasty. The rice cooker is very useful too, no more sticky lumps of goo.

I like to cook dishes from around the world so my kitchen gadgets reflect that I have a pasta maker and parmesan cheese shaver. I also like Chinese food so I have a non stick wok with all the accessories and a bamboo steamer for fish and vegetables. Indian food is another of my favorites and I have a set of Balti cooking pans and bowls. Not all kitchen gadgets are the result of modern technology. One of my treasured possessions is my granite pestle and mortar. It’s very efficient for crushing herbs and spices for my curries and I think it’s just about unbreakable.

My Espresso coffee maker saves me in the mornings. That’s one of the things I’d rescue from the house if there was a fire. I insist on the best, sharp kitchen knives and I have an electric knife sharpener. My knives sit in a knife block, including the large meat cleaver. I also have a knife with an extra thin blade for slicing salmon and ham. My other kitchen gadgets include a fruit and vegetable slicer, a juicer and a salad spinner.

Most of my friends grew out of the 1970s phase for fondue sets, but I still like them and I have a very nice cast iron one. I also like to make jam from the plums and blackberries that grow in my garden. I have the pan, thermometer and muslin strainer. You can’t beat a good old fashioned egg timer for making perfect eggs. Probably the most useful of the kitchen gadgets I have is the bookshelf that holds all my recipe books!

Cheese Tools

Cheese, nuts, and chocolate can be grated ahead of time with this rotary grater, and stored conveniently right inside the silicone-sealed chamber until ready to use. Or, cut the exact size chunk you want to grate, insert it, seal it, and just before serving you can churn out a fresh sprinkle of parmesan on a casserole or flourish that whipped cream topping with a dusting of dark chocolate shavings. To use, squeeze the soft-grip handles with one hand, which causes the silicone-edged feeder to push the food against the sharp stainless-steel grating cylinder, and turn the soft rotating knob with the other hand. A plastic cap on the barrel keeps grated pieces contained, or removes to let the food grate directly into a bowl, on a pie, etc. The stainless-steel grating cylinder measures 3 by 1-1/2 inches, while overall the grater measures 6 by 5 by 3-1/4 inches. Easily disassembled for cleaning, the entire grater is dishwasher-safe. –Ann Bieri
