The Luxury Kitchen of Tomorrow Can Be Yours Today

At a time when the real estate market is stagnant, the experts will tell you it makes more sense to stay put and upgrade than to move. And if you’re like most people, the place you’ll want to start is in the kitchen, which typically offers the highest return on investment and is often the most popular room in the house.

You may be scared off by the fact that the average kitchen remodel costs $54,241 according to Remodeling Magazine. But you don’t have to invest in a complete kitchen remodel to improve your situation dramatically. The kitchen of tomorrow can be yours today if you make just a few changes.

A good place to start is by replacing your conventional cook top and oven with an automatic cooker that can do everything from making omelets and cooking pasta to grilling steaks and baking cookies at the touch of a button, thanks to its intelligent cooking feature.

Thermador Induction Cooktop

Buy New: $3,039.00

A Thermador kitchen is more luxurious, more efficient and more beautiful than any other kitchen. Because for seven decades, Thermador has been at the forefront of fusing the art and science of design and ingenuity. From introducing the first built-in oven almost 50 years ago to revolutionizing gas cooktops with the patented Star Burner; and from designing the first retractable downdraft ventilation system to advancing speed cooking technology; Thermador has helped transform the American kitchen. Thermador develops their own proprietary induction technology to ensure that they meet the strict standards for quality, precision, durability and performance. One of their unique features is the Stainless Steel Trim. It’s the cooktop of choice by professional chefs.

The RATIONAL SelfCooking Center is already used prominently in restaurants and other commercial operations, but smaller versions of it are now showing up in more and more residential kitchen remodels. For your next dinner party, wouldn’t it be great to be able to grill chicken and bake a cake at the same time? Or how about preparing hors d’oeuvres, grilling steak and cooking fries simultaneously; or cooking salmon and steaming vegetables at the same time without any flavor transfer and perfect results every time?

The SelfCooking Center’s LevelControl feature allows you to cook various foods at the same time. This feature is coveted by homeowners who love to cook but don’t have a lot of time to do it. And, if your family is like many American families, you know how hard it is to get everybody to eat the same thing or get to the dinner table at the same time. Just prep and plate your meal — or meals — ahead of time and finish them off when you’re ready to eat.

To make things even simpler, there is no shortage of accessories like the no-stick moulds that make it quick and easy to prepare muffins, vegetable mousses, poached eggs and more. After the cooking is finished, the SelfCooking Center even cleans itself with the CleanJet system and cleaning tablets.

For more information about RATIONAL’s SelfCooking Center, log on to www.rationalusa.com.

Tired of having to rinse dishes at the end of a meal before putting them in the dishwasher? Make that practice a thing of the past by upgrading to a newer model that is capable of sensing how dirty your dishes are. The sprayers will work extra hard in areas where they’re needed, and back off where they’re not. There are even machines available today that are able to determine exactly how much water is needed to wash the current load, so you don’t have to feel guilty about washing just a meal’s worth of dishes ever again.

Another futuristic appliance that industry insiders say is just around the corner is a refrigerator that keeps track of what’s inside. It’s so smart, it can also suggest menus that use some of those foods, and once you’ve selected the menu, will supply a grocery list for other items you need to pick up.

Feel like your kitchen is cluttered? Move the faucet off the countertop by upgrading to a wall-mounted faucet unit. Out of drawer space? You may want to opt for under-the-oven hood storage where you can hide up to 20 pounds worth of kitchen paraphernalia.

These are just some of the upgrades that will turn a run-of-the-mill kitchen into something extraordinary.

Serve up Affordable Protein

The first of each year often leaves us looking for ways to streamline overextended budgets and expanded waistlines, too. Fortunately, eggs can help us mend budget excesses and get back into the groove of healthful eating.

The one thing that probably discourages more people from purchasing and using cast iron is maintenance. Like carbon steel woks, cast iron cooking pieces require “seasoning.” To many this is a mysterious or overly time-consuming process. Even if you treasure fond memories of eggs and pancakes cooked in grandmother’s ancient, blackened skillet, you might have no idea how to turn your new pan into such a treasure. Fortunately Lodge has come out with the new Logic line, which has been evenly coated on all surfaces with an electrostatic spray of vegetable oil. Next the cookware is put into an extremely high temperature industrial oven which bakes the coating into the surface. Not only will you be spared the time and effort of seasoning, but also the new piece you buy will look and perform better than if you had seasoned it at home. Just like that heirloom pan you will find that even pineapple upside down cake doesn’t stick to this surface. A large skillet, such as this one, is ideal for frying chicken or catfish or for baking a pie.

Despite the fact that eggs provide the highest quality protein of any food, they’re a real protein bargain. It’s easy to compare the price of eggs to the price of other protein foods. A dozen Large eggs weigh 1 1/2 pounds, so the price per pound of Large eggs is two-thirds of the price per dozen. For example, if Large eggs cost 90 cents per dozen, they’re only 60 cents per pound. At $1.20 per dozen, Large eggs are just 80 cents per pound. There isn’t another high-quality protein food that can compare.

Nutrient-dense eggs can also help us manage our weight. A good breakfast can help us avoid overeating by making us feel full longer. In adult research, when overweight women had a protein-based breakfast (eggs, toast and fruit spread), they ate fewer calories the rest of the day compared to women who had a carbohydrate-based breakfast (bagel, cream cheese and yogurt). Although the calorie level for both breakfasts was the same, the protein-based breakfast made the women feel more satisfied. Because they didn’t feel ‘starved’ at other meals, the women could avoid filling up with too much food throughout the day.

There’s no reason to reserve eggs just for breakfast, though. The protein power of eggs can provide the energy we need any meal of the day, including dinner. Because just about everyone loves eggs, you’re likely to find that your family appreciates the comfort of hearty egg dishes for evening meals, too. And, you’ll appreciate how easy egg dishes are to prepare.

Give one of these recipes a try or find an economical, protein-packed recipe to appeal to your family at www.IncredibleEgg.org:

Easy, Do-it-Yourself Upgrades to Make Your Home More Functional

The age-old argument of form versus function need not apply while upgrading your home. There are easy, do-it-yourself ways to improve your living spaces while making your home more beautiful and functional. Whether your home is a small apartment or a large estate there are many simple, low-cost projects that can have a big impact.

Unlike the cookie-cutter homes of yesteryear, today people want their interior spaces to be customized. Upgrades such as custom walk-in clothes closets and slab granite countertops are nice, but pricey and frequently require professional installation. What if you live in an older home that has no overhead lighting in the bedroom? Or you’ve got a small living room that has room for extra seating or a coffee table, but not both?

Under Cabinet—Out of Sight, Not Out of Mind
There are many products that may be installed under your cabinets to make your kitchen more functional while using previously wasted space. If you like to be entertained while preparing food, but have no counter space to spare, try an under cabinet television, radio or combination of the two. Under cabinet lighting brightens up any kitchen space and can shed light on nooks and crannies that had been neglected in the dark.

Install an under cabinet spice rack to free up valuable counter real estate. The racks hold 14 to 24 jars of herbs and spices without sacrificing cabinet, counter or drawer space.

Feeny 4 Tier Spice Rack 13 3/4″ Wide White

Buy New: $23.94

I love the fact that I can find my spices much more quickly now! I use lots of them - and often. Only the fact that it wasn’t five/six rows long and that the bottom shelf is a bit deeper than I would have liked, kept it from being a 5. I have it on my pantry shelf door. One that was more shelves would have accommodated almost all of my spices.

Up a Wall
If you need to add extra space to your place, look up. The walls are an often overlooked area when adding storage to your home. Add shelving to the kitchen, bathroom, laundry area, linen and clothing closets to increase space for the things we accumulate.

The least expensive way to add shelving is to purchase pre-made wire shelves from your local retailer. But wire shelves are not very attractive and the spaces between the wires often allow for products—and messes—to spill through. The Shelfanator is a solid white wood-look shelf cover specifically designed to fit right over wire shelving. The Shelfanator cover locks in place and creates a flat, even and sturdy surface on top of sometimes clumsy wire shelves and gives them a custom look. The covers are water and stain resistant and significantly brighten up the areas where wire shelving is typically used—laundry rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and closets. Installation takes just a few minutes. The product can be purchased at www.Shelfanator.com.

Shed Some Light in Tight Spaces
The addition of a comfortable chair and wall-mounted lighting can easily create a book nook in an unused corner. Adding wall-mounted lighting to both sides of a bed provides light that is adjustable based on the reader’s — or sleeper’s — preference. Lighting mounted on the wall is stylish, clean, uncluttered and does not take up precious table space needed for alarm clocks and books.

Install dimmer switches to control the light level in a living room, bedroom or dining area. Dimmer switches add ambience and changing the light instantly changes the way a room looks.

The Garage—Not Just for the Car Anymore
Purchase an epoxy coating kit from your local hardware retailer and follow the simple instructions to transform your dingy garage floor in just a few hours. Not only does a fresh epoxy coat look nice and add value, but it hides stains and is easy to clean. It even increases the usable floor space in the garage by brightening the space and eliminating formerly cobwebbed and dirt covered spaces.

Stuff to Put More Stuff
The next time you’re in the market for a chair or coffee table, purchase a piece of furniture that does double duty. There are coffee tables with tops that lift up to create a workspace and have shelves and drawers to store the remote controls. Storage ottomans have hidden space inside to store books and blankets, but when the top is on they add extra seating or can act as a footrest or table. Sofa beds offer a comfortable seating option and the bed inside pulls out when guests stay overnight.

The next time you have a free afternoon, take time to upgrade and customize your space. The payoff is clean, uncluttered rooms that are comfortable and functional.

* Pillsbury Reduced-Sugar Zebra Biscotti

Ingredients:
Crisco No-Stick Cooking Spray
1 (18.25 oz.) Pillsbury Reduced Sugar Devils Food Cake
1/2 cup Crisco Butter Shortening
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon water
1/3 cup Pillsbury Reduced Sugar Vanilla Frosting
1/3 cup Pillsbury Reduced Sugar Chocolate Fudge Frosting

Preparation Directions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly spray large cookie sheet with no-stick cooking spray. Place cake mix in large mixing bowl. Melt shortening in microwave-safe bowl in microwave on high for 30 seconds. Stir until smooth. Add melted shortening, eggs and water to cake mix. Stir with wooden spoon until evenly moistened. Batter will be stiff. Spray hands with no-stick cooking spray. Work dough with hands until cake mix is totally absorbed.

Divide dough in half. Shape each half into a 9×3-inch loaf on prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven. Cool on cookie sheet for 15 minutes. Cut each loaf into 3/4-inch slices. Stand upright on cookie sheet. Bake an additional 15 minutes. Remove from oven. Cool 10 minutes.

Place each frosting in a separate quart-size resealable freezer bag. Close. Microwave on high for 8 seconds or just until soft. Knead gently in bag. Press frosting to one corner of bag. Cut very small opening off the corner. Drizzle each frosting over cooled biscotti to make stripes.

Presto 05466 ProFry Stainless-Steel Dual-Basket Immersion-Element 12-Cup Deep Fryer January 8, 2008

One word: Amazing.
The glowing reviews were my reason for buying this model, and now that I’ve had the chance to use it for a while, I feel I should contribute mine.

It may not have an LCD display, a thermometer, or a timer, but this thing can fry. Everything I’ve made in it has turned out great. French fries, jalapeno poppers, popcorn chicken, and chicken wings all come out perfect.

A recent review has stated that the temp knob is wrong and the oil isn’t hot enough, and while I’m sure it isn’t perfect, the exact opposite happens for me. The oil, when set on 375, is usually higher than that, so if I want to cook something on 375 (fries, for instance), I will set the knob a little under 375, and they come out great.

A couple tips: For crispier foods, fry with the lid off. Frying french fries twice (frying them for around 3-4 minutes, just enough to become soft, and then letting them sit for 15+ minutes, then frying again until done) works really good. When you take foods out of the oil, they’re still cooking, keep this in mind so you don’t burn things.

Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor

Hamilton Beach 67650 Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor

List Price: $89.99
Buy New: $68.99
You Save: $21.00 (23%)

Hamilton Beach resolves the complaints of many customers tired of chopping fruits and vegetables to feed through ordinary home juicer chutes. The Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor is designed to accept whole fruits - or at least larger pieces - for speedier, easier juicing. When it’s more convenient, you’re more likely to use it. So don’t shy away from the fresh taste and nutrition of freshly extracted juices. With its large chute and powerful motor, juicing at home makes more sense than ever. Juice cup included.

Great for first-time juicer January 14, 2008
This is my first juicer, and so far, I’m very happy with it. I only use it a couple of times a week, so it is not something I use daily. I’ve had it for about a month and for its purpose in our household, it works great. I did some preliminary research before purchasing it and can confirm the other positive reviews that it received from other consumers. The only slight drawback is the clean-up; it isn’t difficult, but it is a multi-step process. With practice, however, I think I will get more efficient and as long as you clean right after you juice, it is a cinch. Great product!

Zevro Dual Dry Cereal, Food Dispenser

Zevro Dual Dry Food Dispenser

List Price: $49.95
Buy New: $26.00
You Save: $23.95 (48%)

Tired of all that cereal box clutter on your countertops? This system effectively stores and dispenses your cereal while keeping it fresh! Easy to fill, and to clean, you’ll find using this method is fun and efficient. The tap also controls portion size. Children will love this device and adults will find it extremely convenient.

We loved this so much that we wound up buying a second one of these to accommodate 4 different cereals (we have 4 kids). And yes, this doesn’t easily facilitate all cereals - but as a mom, you can tell you kids “you can have this, this or this. now what’ll it be?” We’ve worked it out that way. No more Fruit Loops, but now I can buy the Trix stuff that comes in the bags — which is much cheaper and the kids don’t care. And it fits in this handy dispenser. Or the Cocoa Puffs version of the cheap stuff in the bags - again, it fits in the dispenser and my kids don’t know the difference between the name brand and the generic brand. My only drawback is that I may be slightly neurotic and every time I take it apart to clean it, I’m afraid I’m going to break it. It is a little flimsy. You’re probably better off keeping the same cereal in it for a while before cleaning it rather than putting the stress on the plastic.

• Flour Power: 9-cup
• Dimensions: 13.9″ H x 8.7″ W x 14.1″ D
• Weight: 28-lbs.

Love it! January 8, 2008

I had not used the Kitchen Aid Artisan before I purchased it, but had seen many cooks use it on TV. No other mixer I have used comes close to this one. It will mix up whipped cream in just a few minutes, other mixers I have used take 10 minutes or so. With the way the mixer head rotates, you don’t have to do anything except maybe scrape the bowl a few times. I made cookie dough with no problem, my old mixer would overheat on thick products like cookie dough and potatoes. I love this product, it makes mixing sooooo easy!

An Explanation On How To Use An Espresso Machine

So its got the water in now you turn the machine on and then wait for the heater light to indicate that the water has been heated to the ideal temperature, which is just below boiling point.

DeLonghi EC155 Espresso Maker
Features:
• 15-bar pump-driven espresso machine with durable stainless-steel broiler
• 2 thermostats for separately controlling water and steam pressure
• Self-priming operation; accommodates E.S.E. pods and ground espresso
• Adjustable swivel jet frother; removable 35-ounce water tank; “on/off” switch
• Measures 7-1/2 by 9-1/2 by 11-1/8 inches; 1-year warranty

Now you place the ground coffee into the basket and tamp it down. The best coffee to use is one that has been freshly ground as after grinding the volatile oils which were previously protected by the bean are exposed to the air which then oxidize and the coffee becomes stale. Unfortunately this occurs immediately after the coffee has been ground and so it is important that you tamp and extract the espresso as quickly as possible. Whilst you are grinding the coffee beans preheat and warm the group head by turning on the pump for several seconds. Then remove the portafilter and dump out the espresso and then wipe the basket dry with a clean towel. When wiping the basket you are preventing water from finding a path of least resistance and this will help to ensure an even extraction of the espresso.

You now install the portafilter in to the machine by twisting and then place a small cup beneath its spout. Now turn the valve on your machine to the espresso position and this will engage the micro switch, which starts the pump, which in turn pressurizes the heating chamber and hot water to a pressure of 15 atmospheres (220 psi). This pressure forces the hot water through the ground coffee and out of the spout. A good espresso machine will take about 25 seconds to produce a 1.5 ounces of espresso.

Then all you need to do is put the switch back into the middle position and you can now steam and froth some milk for making a latte. To do this you need to place a container with some cold milk under the steam wand so that is submerged. You then turn the valve to the steam position, this will energize the resistive heater, which quickly boils the water in the heating vessel and opens the valve that starts the flow of steam to the nozzle. You will notice that the pump runs intermittently in order to keep the heating vessel supplied with water and the steam will quickly heat up the milk. If you want froth then you need to hold the steam nozzle near to the surface of the milk.

With the instructions shown above on how to use an espresso machine you should be making espressos, cappuccinos and lattes just like the ones you can buy at your local coffee shop.
